University of Myitkyina

The University of Myitkyina, located in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State in northern Myanmar, is one of the longstanding institutions of higher education in the region under Ministry of Education, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The history of higher education in Kachin State dates back to 14 July 1958, when the Kachin State Council, the government, and local leaders collaborated to establish higher education opportunities in the region. In 1963, the institution was opened as a Junior College. It subsequently developed through several stages, becoming Myitkyina College in 1968, Kachin State Regional College in 1977, and Myitkyina Regional College in 1981. In 1986, the institution entered a new stage of development by expanding into degree-level education. During this period, a total of 1,284 students graduated. In 1998, the institution was officially upgraded to Myitkyina University. Since then, the University has continued to expand its academic programmes, student services, research activities, and institutional partnerships. Since 2026, Dr. Soe Moe Lwin has served as the Acting Rector. From 1963 to 2025, more than 145,000 students have enrolled in the University's regular programmes. The University also introduced distance education in 1993, providing wider access to higher education. Today, the University operates under the concept of “Two Systems, One Campus,” comprising regular and distance education systems. Today, the University of Myitkyina has 15 academic departments and offers a wide range of programmes, including 17 Bachelor's degree programmes in Arts and Sciences, 15 Master's degree programmes in Arts and Sciences, and 4 PhD programmes in Physics, Law, Botany, and English. All academic programmes and curricula offered by the University are duly approved by the Board of Studies under the Ministry of Education, Myanmar. The University's academic and student-support infrastructure includes a library, sports facilities, student offices, International Relations Office, and Technology and Innovation Support Centre. These facilities contribute to creating a supportive environment for teaching, learning, research, innovation, and international engagement.
