One of the highlights of my year, every year, is getting to sit down and ta=
lk to the Washington State Teacher of the Year. In 2024, that title belongs=
 to Blaire Penry. Blaire teaches career and technical education, or CTE, an=
d fine arts in the Auburn school district, which is located about 30 miles =
south of Seattle. But what really sets her apart is her approach to online =
education.=20

When schools switched to remote instruction in March 2020 because of the CO=
VID-19 pandemic, Blaire quickly realized that the existing curriculum didn=
=E2=80=99t work. So, she helped develop a new one that worked in an online =
setting and innovated new techniques to keep her students engaged. The work=
 that Blaire and her colleagues did was eventually spun off into an online =
school for students who opted to continue remote instruction=E2=80=94even a=
fter most Washington schools reopened a few years ago.=20

For my latest post on Gates Notes, I share my favorite takeaways from our c=
onversation. I was fascinated to learn some of the non-pandemic-related rea=
sons that certain students thrive in online learning settings: more flexibi=
lity in their schedules, greater control over their learning environments, =
and less pressure to perform in front of peers. I also loved hearing about =
Blaire=E2=80=99s approach to teaching drama=E2=80=94a class I didn=E2=80=99=
t think would lend itself well to online instruction. And, of course, I had=
 to ask her thoughts on AI in the classroom.=20
